Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the Role

The Foundation team requires a Tutorial Assistant to support the delivery of our foundation programme(s) at our Mokoia Campus during Semester 2, 2026.

 This is a fixed-term, part-time position (0.5 FTE) from 20 July 2026 to 13 November 2026. The role will support ākonga to develop their academic reading, writing, study, and basic numeracy skills under the guidance of the Foundation teaching team. 

A passion for working with Foundation ākonga is essential, along with a commitment to creating an engaging, inclusive, and learner-centred environment.

Working alongside academic staff, you will provide practical learning support to help ākonga build the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to progress into further study, training, or employment pathways.

Ngā mahi | Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small-group learning support to Foundation ākonga.
  • Assist ākonga to develop academic reading, writing, study, and basic numeracy skills.
  • Reinforce learning activities and concepts introduced by teaching staff.
  • Support ākonga to understand instructions, learning materials, and assessment requirements.
  • Assist with the preparation, organisation, and distribution of learning resources.
  • Encourage learner participation, confidence, engagement, and independence.
  • Identify ākonga who may require additional support and refer these needs to the appropriate teaching staff.
  • Provide teaching staff with relevant observations about learner engagement and progress.
  • Help maintain an inclusive, positive, and culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Foundation team to support programme delivery and learner success.

You will bring:

  • Experience supporting learners in a foundation, secondary, adult education, community, or tertiary setting.
  • Strong academic reading and writing skills.
  • Confidence supporting learners with basic numeracy.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to encourage learners with a range of needs and educational experiences.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting Foundation ākonga and helping them achieve their goals.
  • An understanding of and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equitable learner outcomes.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and follow the guidance of academic staff.

He kōrero anō | Reason for Vacancy

The Foundation team requires additional tutorial support for the delivery of the NZ2863 Study and Employment Pathways Level 3 programme at Mokoia Campus during Semester 2, 2026.

This fixed-term appointment will provide ākonga with additional individual and small-group support across the academic literacy, study skills, and numeracy components of the programme.
