Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is the Bay of Plenty’s largest tertiary education provider, serving both the Bay of Plenty and South Waikato regions with major campuses in Rotorua, Tauranga, Whakatāne, Taupō and Tokoroa, and learning centres spread across the region. We’re committed to working in partnership with iwi, hapū and whānau of the region and for Māori to achieve educational success as Māori. The mana ōrite Tiriti relationship with Te Kāhui Mātauranga (a collective of iwi representative of the region) is our organisational response to living Te Tiriti o Waitangi  so we can meet the educational aspirations of Māori learners and iwi throughout the region more effectively.

As a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga – NZ Institute of Skills and Technology (Te Pūkenga), Toi Ohomai is also part of the national journey to transform vocational learning – making it more responsive to the needs of all regions of New Zealand, their regional learners, industries, employers and communities.  Te Pūkenga has also set a clear focus on ensuring that its subsidiaries prioritise urgency of action regarding Te Tiriti o Waitangi: Delivering partnership, protection and participation to achieve equity for Māori.

We are now seeking to recruit a new Executive Director - Tiriti Partnerships who will be joining Toi Ohomai at a key transformation phase. We are seeking an experienced and committed executive leader to drive the organisation in the activation of Tiriti relationships and lead the organisation in its growth as a meaningful and valued partner to tangata whenua.

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Maintain and enhance the mana ōrite Tiriti relationship with Te Kāhui Mātauranga
  • Implement Te Kāhui Mātauranga framework, including achievement of the Mana Ōrite Tiriti Relationship Agreement deliverables
  • Leadership within and for Toi Ohomai in the Partnership and Equity workstream of Te Pūkenga
  • Leadership within and for Toi Ohomai in the transition and transformation workstream of Te Pūkenga
  • Strategic leadership within Toi Ohomai for the Tiriti responsibilities and activity required by Te Pūkenga
  • Leadership and strategic guidance for kaupapa Māori initiatives and Māori cultural integrity within the organisation 
  • Appropriate cultural support and advice to the Chief Executive and Toi Ohomai Board of Directors.

You will be:

  • An experienced executive leader and Tiriti-led practitioner who can demonstrate both executive leadership success and Māori cultural capability.  Politically astute and both confident and competent to represent the organisation in all fora, and most importantly in Te Ao Māori.
  • A good listener and great problem solver, who is able to translate Tiriti partner needs and aspirations into practical actions for the organisation to operationalise.
  • A collaborator with strong Tiriti partnership nous who thrives on challenges and innovation.
  • High performing and determined, who likes to work at pace to deliver tangible high-quality results that deliver on Te Tiriti o Waitangi.  

This opportunity provides for a work-base at either our Rotorua or Tauranga campus although travel throughout our rohe is common. This is a rewarding leadership role in which your credibility and passion will enable you to make a difference to a broad range of stakeholders.
