Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the Role
Lead the establishment of the Academy of Sport and Sport Science Laboratory and shape a new and exciting future for sport, recreation, and athlete development at Toi Ohomai. This role will build strategic partnerships, develop innovative programmes, and create opportunities that enhance ākonga success while strengthening connections with industry, iwi, community organisations, and the wider sporting sector.
As part of this two-year fixed-term opportunity, you will design and embed the programmes, systems, partnerships, and operating frameworks required to establish a sustainable and industry-connected Academy of Sport and sport science capability that delivers long-term value for ākonga, stakeholders, and communities. You will also provide values-based leadership to the Academy of Sport and Mokoia Recreation Centre teams.
Ngā mahi | Key Responsibilities
- Establish the Academy of Sport operating model, programmes, and services, including athlete recruitment, selection and monitoring.
- Establish and implement the Sport Science Laboratory, including operating frameworks, service offerings, equipment, commercial services and research opportunities.
- Lead athlete testing, performance monitoring and development initiatives, applying sport science insights to programme design.
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships across sport, education, iwi, industry, and community sectors.
- Develop participation pathways that enhance learner engagement, achievement, and progression.
- Secure and manage funding, sponsorship, partnership, and commercial opportunities.
- Lead, coach and develop kaimahi across the Academy of Sport and Mokoia Recreation Centre.
- Drive continuous improvement through performance monitoring and evaluation.
- Ensure safe, compliant, and high-quality programme and facility delivery.
- Contribute to Toi Ohomai strategic priorities through collaborative leadership.
He kōrero mōu | About You
You bring:
- A postgraduate qualification in Sport Science, Exercise Science, Human Performance, Strength and Conditioning or a related discipline – or equivalent qualifications and significant professional experience in athlete performance and sport science environments.
- Experience in athlete development and high-performance sport environments, including athlete performance testing, monitoring and analysis.
- Experience establishing, operating or contributing to sport science laboratories, athlete testing environments, performance centres or commercial sport science services.
- Commercial acumen and business development capability.
- Experience establishing and leading new programmes, services, or initiatives.
- Strong partnership and stakeholder engagement capability.
- Leadership, people management, and budget management experience.
- Experience applying Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in the workplace and leading approaches that promote equity for priority learner groups.
- Experience promoting te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori in the workplace (desirable).
